Asperger's Syndrome & Bullying Seminar 2009 On 24th April 2009, Autism Jersey were delighted to bring two of the country's leading authorities on Asperger’s syndrome, Digby Tantam and Richard Mills, to Jersey for an inspirational seminar on Asperger's Syndrome & Bullying. In addition, there was a presentation on the Peer Support programme being run at Haute Vallee School. Biographies of Digby Tantam and Richard Mills can be found below, along with copies of the presentations from the seminar.Digby Tantam , BA (Open) BM BCh (Oxon) MA (Oxon) MPH (Harvard) PhD (London) is Clinical Professor of Psychotherapy and co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Conflict and Reconciliation at the University of Sheffield Acting Director of Teaching, ScHARR and Honorary Consultant Psychotherapist and Psychiatrist. with Sheffield Care Trust, an NHS trust dealing with mental health and social care.His qualifications include degrees in physiology, mathematics and philosophy, medicine, and public health. He trained as a group-analyst at the Institute of Group Analysis (London) and has extensive experience in short-term psychotherapy. He is an honorary member of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association and Group Analysis North. He is a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the European Association of Psychotherapy, the North West Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy, the Society of Psychotherapists, the Society of Existential Analysis, the Society for Psychotherapy Research, the National Autistic Society, and the Association of University Teachers of Psychiatry. He is a qualified member of the Institute of Group Analysis (London), a professional member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, a registrant of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, and has the European Certificate of Psychotherapy. He is an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society, and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is also a member of the Institute of Higher Education and Learning. Digby is on the GMC specialist registers of general psychiatry and medical psychotherapy. Digby is a past Chair of the UK Council for Psychotherapy, Past Chair of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA) and former Registrar of the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP). He is currently Acting Director of Teaching in ScHARR, with a lead on flexible learning. His most recent book is Psychotherapy and Counselling in Practice: A narrative approach, published by Cambridge University Press in 2002
Richard Mills is the Director of Services for the National Autistic Society in the UK. As such, he is responsible for the Autism Services Accreditation programme and for all NAS schools, colleges, residential and day programmes across the UK.Richard was involved in setting up NAS's early intervention programme EarlyBird. In 1995, he opened the Hayes Unit, the first secure residential treatment facility for adults with Asperger syndrome. He currently chairs the NAS research group on ageing and autism. Richard's professional training and background is in applied psychology and social work. He has held positions in the UK's National Health Service, Social Services, and higher education and has been involved in numerous government advisory groups on autism. He has worked as a consultant for the National Development Team for Learning Disability and is now working closely with the British Institute of Learning Disabilities [BILD], particularly on training and physical interventions. Richard's work also extends overseas. In 1995, he was appointed specialist consultant to The Eden Foundation (Malta), where he has overseen the development of their autism programmes, particularly early years. At present, he works with Dr. Lorna Wing on their follow-up study of women with autistic disorders detained in secure hospitals. In 1991 Richard was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has been appointed Director of the Autism Research Trust and works closely with another of our Resident Experts, Professor Simon Baron-Cohen of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University.
