Skills Solutions - Employment Support There are a number of agencies in Jersey who are able to help and support people with an ASD to find and maintain employment. These services are based within Social Security, Health and Social Services and the Voluntary sector. Each service has its own selection criteria and sometimes works with a specialist client group. In order to make access easier the key agencies have formed a partnership called Skills Solutions. Skills solutions is a centralised referral / access point to supported employment services, which provide training and employment opportunities for disabled people, including people with an ASD. Skills Solutions will assist you in accessing the right agency to meet you specific needs and the designated Skill Solutions agency can provide a range of options including assessment and acceptance on to programmes, rehabilitation, sheltered employment, pre-vocational and vocational training. They also offer therapeutic or voluntary work, work shadowing, job sampling and tasters and work experience. For those who wish to access supported or open employment, the Skill Solutions designated agency provides support at interview, real work, negotiations with employers, training whilst in work and long term support. Jersey Employment Trust The Jersey Employment Trust sometimes known as JET is an independent Trust that provides training & development within a work environment for disabled people. JET is made up of a number of support services that can provide a range of work related options, which enables them to provide an individual and flexible service to people with a variety of needs. They run a number of small business units that can provide realistic training in order that individuals can gain the appropriate skills and confidence to return to the work place. Each business unit has been designed to offer a range of occupational and therapeutic skills and is staffed by trained supervisors who can provide support whilst the individual is gaining the necessary skills to progress into paid employment. They can offer a range of training courses that are designed specifically to meet individual needs. Courses are varied and range from helping improve basic skills, such as literacy and numeracy - to gaining confidence, employability and job skills. They can also offer specific vocational training, that complement the small business units. They can also assist in setting up work trial placements with companies who can offer experience of working in specific industrial settings. These opportunities can be very valuable as they allow individuals to try out different types of work before making a long term commitment. It also means they can get a reference from a company that provides employment in a particular type of work. JET can provide one to one support to help individuals find paid employment. This may include contacting and negotiating with employers on their behalf; on the job training and long term support and follow ups to check how things are going. Jobscope Jobscope provides supported, community based employment for adults who have a variety of mental health problems. Jobscope have access to a number of training opportunities including Island Wood / Wood and Wheels who manufacture and finish wooden furniture and Meadowsweet Produce, who grow and retail organic vegetables. They also support people in individual placements in the community. Applications for assistance from Jobscope should be made through Skill Solutions.
Workwise Workwise is part of the Work Zone at Employment & Social Security. The aim of Workwise is to help people with a special employment need into suitable employment. Applications for assistance from Workwise should be made through Skill Solutions.
