The Befriending Scheme is available to people with or seeking a diagnosis of Autism, Asperger Syndrome or any other associated complex developmental disorder, plus their families and carers. Befrienders can be matched with a child, teenage or adult affected by autism, or could spend time with others in the family - brothers, sisters, mum or dad. They do a huge variety of things. Autism Jersey recruits and trains volunteers to support people with Autism or Asperger Syndrome and their families. Our volunteer befrienders do not have to be experts in autism. We look for people who are trustworthy, friendly, reliable, willing to learn and sensitive to the needs of others. Autism Jersey provides initial and ongoing training and support. We pay travel expenses and ask that the family pay any other additional expenses. If a match is made prior to diagnosis, and that subsequent diagnosis does not fit the above criteria, the befriending arrangement will continue until the conclusion of the matched period and may not be renewed. All matching arrangements are made at the discretion of Autism Jersey, who reserves the right to make the final decision in all cases. If you have any queries regarding the befriending scheme or would like a befriender, please contact us on 871166 or email befriending@autismjersey.org.
