This course replaces the previously run Introduction to Autism course. SPELL Induction introduces Autism & Asperger Syndrome. It concentrates on Autism & Asperger Syndrome Awareness and will look at early indicators, how to get a diagnosis, what support is available on the Island and how you would structure the environment to accommodate a child with Autism in your care.  Suitable for all.

What is the SPELL framework?
SPELL training has now been formally approved by the “States of Jersey Joint Secretariat Executive Board for the support of people with a disability” as the standard cross agency, basic training for all people working with Autism. SPELL is a nationally recognised qualification and certificates will be provided by the National Autistic Society. Over many years, the National Autistic Society’s, Schools and Services for adults have developed a framework for understanding and responding to the needs of children and adults on the autistic spectrum. The framework is also useful in identifying underlying issues; in reducing the disabling effects of the condition; and in providing a cornerstone for communication. It also forms the basis of all autism specific staff training and an ethical basis for intervention. The acronym for this framework is SPELL.

SPELL stands for Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links. Attendees must complete the two sessions and in the correct order
